Important Questions To Ask Your Roofing Contractor

Do you have experience installing this particular type of roofing?

Yes, your roofer should have experience or at least you would want your roofer to have experience installing your roofing materials. It’s even more of a bonus if they are factory certified installers. Factory certified installers (such as us) have been trained and certified by the manufacturer.

Do you subcontract any parts of the job?

Some roofing contractors do subcontract. You may want to take this into consideration when hiring your contractor. If they subcontract their employees, you don’t necessarily know who might be showing up to roof your home. Here at MCE Roofing, all of our roofing technicians are in-house full time employees. It’s also important to know if your roofer subcontracts any part of their job because if they don’t pay their subcontractors, those subcontractors can legally go after you and put a lien on your property.

Do you take any precautions during the winter and rainy months?

Your roofer should be cautious about cold and freezing temperatures as well as rain. A roof should never be installed in the rain, but can be installed in cold weather. Your roofer should be aware of the weather and prepared to tarp any parts of the roof that are not completed if rain does interrupt the installation process.

Do you inspect the attic for mold and proper ventilation?

Yes. If you have access to attic crawl space, you want your roofer to do a thorough inspection of your entire roofing system which should include an attic inspection (when available) and inspection of the roof sheathing. They should be knowledgeable about ventilation code requirements and make adjustments as needed.

When can I expect my roof to be completed after I sign the contract?

Each contractor is different and some can be booked out longer than others. Don’t hesitate to ask upfront about when the roof will be completed especially if you have a timeline you need to stick to.

Is it typical for my roofing contractor to reschedule my project?

Yes, construction projects can be hard to estimate exactly how long they may take and sometimes unexpected repairs or delays do happen. Be sure your contractor keeps in contact with you and lets you know of any delays. Here at MCE Roofing we have a sophisticated scheduling program that helps us keep our projects organized on a time line. If we experience a delay because of a project taking too long or weather delays that prevent us from roofing, we will contact you and let you know.

Do you provide warranties or guarantees on the materials and installation?

Most roofers should offer a guarantee or manufacturer warranty of some sort. If they don’t, just ask! MCE Roofing is a manufactured certified contractor which allows us to offer some of the industries top of the line warranties. It also guarantees you that we have been properly trained by the manufacturer to install your roofing materials.

What happens if a roofer falls off my roof? Am I liable for that?

If your contractor is properly licensed, bonded and insured, any accidents related to the job do not fall on the homeowner. Do your research ahead of time and look into the company’s CCB License. If they do not provide you with one, they could be breaking the law and putting you at risk. Most states require roofing contractors to be licensed and require their CCB to be listed on all business related items.

How long is the project going to take?

This could vary dramatically from roofer to roofer. Some have more manpower then others so don’t hesitate to ask upfront. Here at MCE Roofing, we have two in-house factory trained roofing crews who work very efficiently. When you hire MCE for your roofing project, you can rest assured your roof is installed with expert care and craftsmanship in a timely manner with exceptional clean up.

Do you have references?

Your roofing contractor shouldn’t hesitate to provide references or addresses of homes they have completed in the area. If they have been in business for a significant amount of time, they may have before and after pictures on their website or be able to provide pictures of their work.
